Bill O’Connell Bill O’Connell, born in New York City in 1953, is a masterful jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader known for his compelling fusion of modern jazz and Afro-Caribbean rhythms. A graduate of Oberlin Conservatory, O’Connell came to prominence as pianist and arranger for Latin jazz great Mongo Santamaria in the late 1970s. He has since collaborated with Dave Valentin, Gato Barbieri, and Jerry Gonzalez, among others. As a leader, he has released numerous critically acclaimed recordings, including Rhapsody in BlueHeart Beat, and Jazz Latin. O’Connell’s compositions are celebrated for their rhythmic vitality and harmonic sophistication. In addition to his performance career, he is a respected educator and a longtime faculty member at Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts. His work bridges genres and generations with power, nuance, and authenticity.
