ABOUT THE EAST END SPECIAL PLAYERS
A BRIEF HISTORY
The East End Special Players have been creating theater since 1985. Started as a Saturday program for adults with varied needs and abilities by the Towns of East Hampton and Southampton, their first director, Helen Rudman, chose theater as the emphasis of the program. The Players have performed at Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor, at Guild Hall in East Hampton, LTV, Dowling College, Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center, Southampton College, in Albany at the Governor’s Mansion, at Camp Venture in Westchester, and at the Alliance Francaise in New York City. In recent years, their performances in local high schools have garnered standing ovations as students experience valuable awareness of the Players. The EESP are available for school performances and have appeared at Southampton High School, East Hampton High School and The Ross School. The plays are taped and aired on LTV, Cable Channel 20 and are highlighted on You Tube.
THE PLAYERS
There are over 30 actors who comprise the troupe. Some speak, others do not. Some can memorize their lines, others are prompted. Some are natural actors, others have to be coaxed on stage but what they can do, what they have accomplished is astounding. Twenty years ago the Players performed only in mime; today they are not only acting with words and music, they create the plays themselves. Their first original play, "You Are A Petunia In My Garden", was a series of vignettes in exploration of their lives: what they do and feel and wish for as adults with varied needs, abilities and skills.
ARTISTIC VISION
Director, Jacqui Leader challenges the troupe to reach to the uppermost levels of their abilities and beyond. She teaches them to enunciate, memorize and improvise searching inside themselves for emotion and inspiration. It takes more than a year to develop the plays, but with each subsequent production the actors have stretched their abilities with unique theatrical challenges. Below is a list of productions:
Original Comedy- "All Ghosts On Deck"
Original Comedy - "Whimsey World"
Original Comedy - "Trouble in Jamaica"
Original Play - "Gigi"
Tableaux vivant - “The Fish Juggler”
African folktales and dance - “Kokrobite Junction”
Ancient Irish myth - “The Legend of Deirdre”
Original play - "You are a Petunia in My Garden"
Romance - “Cyrano de Bergerac”
Commedia de l’Arte - Moliere’s “Scams of Scapin”
The plays are fully realized theater presentations and in many productions artists, dancers and musicians from the community join the Players on stage.
OUR MISSION
The Mission of The East End Special Players (EESP) is to enhance the lives of adults with diverse abilities and special [health care] needs by providing opportunities for self-expression through theater performance and artistic experiences. EESP fosters a growing sense of self-confidence by mentoring and teaching skills that can be showcased to the community.
EESP provides unique and quality encounters featuring joyous social gatherings, creative learning projects for people who have few such opportunities, and, for the public, a window into the lives, personalities and talents of all participants.

Gail Baranello
Gail Baranello is a teaching artist, choreographer and performer. She has trained in many styles of dance since she was 3. In high school, she traveled the east coast on a competition team winning high score medals in jazz, tap and contemporary. While studying Early Childhood ed and working toward her AA degree in Early Childhood and Psychology, she continued her dance education, training and performing in NY at Elite and Variations Dance school. Gail then transferred to SUNY Stony Brook and received her BA. There, she studied Psychology and Dance and was also a student teacher for her dance professor and belonged to the universities internationally traveling dance company. In college is also where she traveled a lot and implemented yoga as a daily practice. Gail then started her masters degree in dance therapy, but soon dropped out to start the A&G Dance Company with her now husband, Adam Baranello.
Her company repertoire since 2005 includes choreographing and performing for AJB Productions’ full length stage shows, feature films, 1 short film and many smaller video and stage projects which brought her all around the country and mainly NYC. Her acting, dancing and choreography were highlighted as many of the films were official selections in International/National Film Festivals and won awards such as “Best Film”.
In addition to teaching in schools and community outreach, she has most recently developed a movement workshop for children with disabilities working in inclusion and self contained settings. She has worked with private clients, The Springs school, AHRC, Flying Point for Autism and LUV Michael. She also created a movement workshop series called “Moving Through…” to help people become more self aware while dealing with various levels of trauma and other issues and held workshops at Stony Brook Southampton hospital, The Dunes rehabilitation center and Artful HomeCare. She has most recently took the position of Associate Director of the East End Special Players where she assists in scheduling, planning and executing ideas and plans for the Players to develop, grow and perform through the art of performance.
Gail believes she has a lot to offer her community through all of her experiences. Her mission is to lead people to use the arts as a tool of self expression rather than molding themselves into a box of what others expect art or dance to be.
