The Playwrights' Theatre of East Hampton at LTV Studios in association with The Mirror & Masque Theatre Co., by arrangement with Concord Theatricals present “THE ELEPHANT MAN” By Bernard Pomerance

“Elephant Man”
OCT 22 - NOV 1
7:30PM Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays - 2:00PM Saturdays & Sundays
In 1880s London, John Merrick is a horribly deformed young man – a victim of rare skin and bone diseases. Under the care of celebrated physician Frederick Treves, Merrick slowly evolves from an object of pity to a true gentleman, desperate to be recognized as a man like any other.
“Dayne and I started Mirror & Masque with the goal of producing theatre that gives back not only for entertainment’s sake but for the belief that great art can build a better society. The Elephant Man is a play we’ve wanted to do for a long time and we were compelled to bring it to the stage as our inaugural because it is relevant more now than ever. Through the scope of Joseph Merrick’s beautifully tragic life, we ask the audience to explore or re-explore the important ideas of human dignity, decency, and compassion.”
Robert R. Doyle,
Co-Producer & Dr. Frederick Treves

“I’ve wanted to do The Elephant Man because, underneath everything else, it’s a story about what it means to be human. Merrick is looked at, judged and defined by his appearance before people ever take the time to know him. But when they finally do, they discover his intelligence, his humor, his sensitivity and his enormous capacity for love. That idea has always stayed with me. We live in a world where people are so often judged by what can be seen on the surface, and I think this story asks us to look deeper. For me, taking on this role and helping bring this production to life isn’t simply about putting on a great piece of theatre. It’s about reminding people that dignity, compassion and humanity belong to everyone.”
Dayne Rasmussen,
Co-Producer & John Merrick
